A mum has sparked a North-South debate after pairing her Christmas cake with a slice of cheese.

Linzi Higham, 38, from Swadlincote, Derbyshire, has been eating the festive fruit-based cake with a slice of cheese for decades, ever since she was introduced to it as a child.

“I just absolutely love it,” Linzi told Jam Press.

But although she finds the questionable combination delicious, Linzi says she is in the minority as both her family and Southern friends dub it “weird”.

Linzi added: “I’m the only person in my house that will eat Christmas cake so I have a whole cake to eat to myself.

“It takes a while to get through but I do usually have a piece each day during Christmas and New Year.

“Last year, I was still eating Christmas cake in February.”

Earlier this week, the mum-of-three uploaded a picture of her snack to Facebook to ask others how they ate their festive treat.

And it soon became clear the pairing is a popular festive tradition in the North of the country.

The photo was captioned: “Ever since I can remember I have always eaten Christmas cake with a slice of cheese.

“I think it was my Grandpa who first gave it to me but I haven’t met anyone else who does this except people from my family.

“Please tell me I’m not the only one.”

Her post has since received over 2,000 comments from Facebook users.

One person said: “As a true Yorkshire lass….This is the only way to eat Christmas cake!”

A second wrote: “Fruit cake with a slice of cheese is a Northern tradition.”

“My family do this. Everyone else thinks I’m weird. I love it,” a third added.

A fourth Facebook user commented: “You’re not the only one. Tradition in my family too. My hubby had never heard of it. Is it a Yorkshire thing?”

A Southern convert added: “Omg I’m from Essex and my fiance is from up North (Yorkshire) and his mum got me eating Christmas cake with cheese.

“The stronger the better – I love it and can’t eat it any other way now. Really look forward to it at Christmas.”

Others agreed with Linzi that their family members were not fans.

One said: “All over this I’m from the North, and my wife from Cornwall thinks I’m crazy! Next she will tell me Cornish pasties are better than Greggs!!”

A second Facebook user added: “My dad did this, he was from Yorkshire, so it’s the only way I eat my Christmas cake. My husband and children think I’m weird!”

A third added: “Me, just me, my husband and his family think it’s odd. My mum and gran were from Durham. Nice strong cheddar.”

But others were not convinced with the pairing at all.

One naysayer said: “Christmas cake alone is never kind. Cheese with it ah no.”

Another simply said: “Just WEIRD.”
